Vertical Jump & Broad Jump Training for NFL Combine and Pro Day Prospects

The vertical jump and broad jump are simple to measure and hard to fake. They show scouts how much force you can produce, and how fast you can produce it. At Impact Sports Performance in Novi, Michigan, our power development program trains that explosiveness directly, so it shows up on test day.

Your training is led by Jim Kielbaso, the coach Michigan Football hired to prepare its own NFL Draft prospects.

What Scouts Are Testing

Two jump tests measure lower-body power at the Combine and on Pro Day. Each one tells scouts something different.

  • Vertical jump: Measures how high you can jump straight up. It reflects vertical explosiveness, which scouts connect to burst, leaping ability, and overall athleticism.

  • Broad jump: Measures how far you can jump forward from a standstill. It reflects horizontal power, which scouts connect to first-step quickness and drive out of your stance.

Both tests reward the same things: strong hips and legs, fast force production, clean takeoff mechanics, and a controlled landing.

How We Build

Explosive Power

Every athlete begins with an assessment so we can see where your power is limited. Some athletes need more raw strength. Others have the strength but need to produce it faster. Your plan is built around that answer.

01

Force development

Strong legs and hips are the foundation for power. We build lower-body strength with squat, hinge, and single-leg patterns so you have a bigger engine to work with.

02

Explosive power training

Olympic-style lift variations, jumps, and medicine ball throws teach your body to apply force quickly, which is what separates a strong athlete from an explosive one.

03

Takeoff mechanics

We coach the arm swing, the countermovement, and the timing of hip, knee, and ankle extension, so every jump uses all the power you have.

04

Landing control

Sticking a landing is part of a clean rep, and it protects your joints in training. We teach athletes how to absorb force and land balanced, especially on the broad jump.

05

Position-specific power

A lineman and a defensive back do not need the same plan. We adjust exercise selection, loading, and volume to your position and body type.

A Sample Training Week

Every plan is individualized. This is an example of how a power-focused week may be organized.

Day Focus Example Work
Monday Lower-Body Strength Squat and hinge patterns, single-leg strength, core
Tuesday Jump Training Countermovement jumps, box jumps, takeoff and landing drills
Wednesday Recovery & Mobility Mobility, tempo work, soft-tissue and recovery work
Thursday Explosive Power Olympic lift variations, medicine ball throws, broad jump work
Friday Testing & Speed Work Vertical and broad jump testing, sprint work

Tracking Your Power Numbers

We test your jumps regularly, so you can see progress instead of guessing. Below is where verified jump testing results will go.

Athlete / Position Vertical (Before / After) Broad (Before / After) Improvement
[Athlete name, position] [xx.x in / xx.x in] [x' xx" / x' xx"] [+x.x in / +xx in]
[Athlete name, position] [xx.x in / xx.x in] [x' xx" / x' xx"] [+x.x in / +xx in]
[Athlete name, position] [xx.x in / xx.x in] [x' xx" / x' xx"] [+x.x in / +xx in]

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can I improve my vertical or broad jump?

Results depend on your starting point, position, and training history. Jim can give you a realistic target based on your current testing.

Do I need to lift heavy to jump higher?

Strength is the base for power, so yes, strength work matters. We pair it with explosive training so the strength turns into jump height and distance.
